Question:

How can I get may cat to stop eating my dogs food

I have a 10 month old cat and she loves my dog's food. She enjoys her's as well. As soon as I put it down she make a beeline for it, there is nothing besides holding her that will stop her from eating that food.

My dog is good and often will let her go at it and wait for her to move. If I hold her he gets jealous (or something) and comes to see what is going on and wont eat.

Any ideas on how to make her stop eating his food?

  1. Is there a difference between her food and his? I mean is one wet and the other dry, is hers plain and his has extra stuff in it? I would suggest giving her something special in her food. I feed my cats raw chicken in with their dry food (slowly working me way to an all raw diet for them) and they just love it. cut up some raw chicken breast and put a small piece or two in her food. I bet she wont even consider his!

  2. lmao sorry i just cant stop laughn at ur wee problem but as a cat hater,i suggest that u just say 2 him/her 2 get a job and buy his/her own god d**n dog food!!! lol or else just feed them seperately ow or else u could buy that cat repelent stuff and spray it on the dogs bowel...wow thats actually a good idea ha.

  3. Feed them at different times.....or at least different rooms.

  4. play with the cat in another room while the dog eats, then put the food out of reach when the dogs done. Or buy dog food with larger pieces.

  5. My cat loves dog food, but my dog is so protective of his food, he won't even let me go near him when his food is nearby. Cat's need more of the vital ingrediants, found in cat food, which is why cats eat cat food and dogs eat dog food. My suggestion is to buy your cat the same flavor cat food your dog has for dog food. Like for example, your dog could eat beef and chicken flavored dog food, and your cat could eat chicken and beef cat food! If you do this, chances are, your cat will stick to her own food, after all it would taste the same anyways!

  6. It would be a good idea to keep removing her from the dog bowl.  Hopefully she'll learn that's not something she should be doing.  Doesn't mean it'll stop her, but if she sees you she might step away.

The dog food won't hurt her; it just doesn't provide the right nutrition.  But she shouldn't get extra to eat or you'll have a little porker.

Until/if you get her to stop I'd cut back on her regular food.

Would it be possible to keep her out of the room until the dog is done?

You could try offering her a different food, or even just variety in cat foods.  That *might* keep her interested in her own food.

Another idea, crazy as it sounds, would be to switch both your dog and cat to the same food.  There is one brand of food that is completely identical, and that is Nature's Variety Instincts canned food.  I have compared the ingredients word for word and line by line and they are the same.

It's a pricy food but it doesn't get much better.  I actually use it myself.  I do use the cat food line since I don't need to buy the larger can sizes, which the dog food is also offered in.  But if I ever went to the store and they were out, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the dog food.
