Question:

How can I get more backspin and loft with my wedges?

I'm mainly using this one sand wedge I bought that actually doesn't have grooves. the surface is like sandpaper.

i've been practicing a lot with marked balls (so I can see the spin) and i often get a knuckleball type rotation, or a slow backwards roll. is it supposed to spin faster?

i seem to get a better result with a slicing motion, but most advice here says to scoop it?

mainly i'm interested in this for chipping for more accurate placement. i'm getting pretty good at stopping the ball where i want it within 6 feet, but i'm having a hard time getting the loft for longer shots.

  1. Its most likely the surface you practice off of the balls and your clubs. You need nice clean grooves that are very new.

The balls must have spin characteristics like callaway or titleist etc.. The surface must be firm underneath and thin on top.

imagine hitting on the green just not as extreme. The truth is backspin in golf is bad it shortens your drives and balloons the ball into the wind. A little bit goes a long way so you done need much unless your hitting downwind then swing hard and get more backswing to make sure the balls does not go 50 yards past the green.

  2. on chip shots where i don't want a lot of rollout, i tend to play the ball a little back in my stance. and hit down onto the ball. like mentioned earlier it helps to have a good lie, clean/sharp grooves, and a soft ball.

  3. clubhead speed is the key. accelerate through the ball and loft and spin will go up

  4. You will get more backspin and loft with a more descending blow of the club instead of a sweeping motion. Also the more power and loft is strongly associated with the amount of power put into the swing.

  5. On a full swing strike down hard and accelerate through the shot. That will give you max loft and spin. At 75 yards use aprox 3/4 swing strike down hard and accelerate through the shot. Good luck.

  6. try to hit the ball first then the ground and then that will give you some spin.also you need to open your stance to get loft and need to have your hand ahead

    hope this helps

  7. In order to get more backspin you need to make contact with the ball first and take a divot, will create more backspin.  It takes practice, so next time you are at the driving range concentrate on hitting this type of shot with your higher lofted clubs, 7-iron to wedges.

  8. as in all things: keep it simple.  The more you hit down the more loft and more spin you will get on your ball.  The better the contact = more spin.  Let the loft do the work for you, the last thing you want to do is try to help or "lift" the ball, that will result in blades and sculls.  stay down on it and let the club do the work.  Simple..but very effective

  9. Number one you want to grip the club more loosely. This will cause more loft. Then instead of sweeping the ball you want to hit down on it. The divot should be taken in front of the balls original spot. It takes a lot of practice, trust me, im just getting the hang of it.

  10. get under the ball and more wrist, less shoulder

  11. Very very clean face on your chipping club.

Strike down on the ball as if you were trying to "pinch" the ball against the grass/turf.

Its pretty difficult if you get in longer rough, grass gets in between the ball and the club face and will prevent you from getting spin on the ball.

And GOOD FUNDAMENTAL practice, you can practice all you want, but if your practice with bad fundamentals, bad course play soon follows.
