How can I get more involved in the Community?

Question

I know I can recycle, clean up, and help kids after school. But what else can I do?

I really want to help. I like group activities, but I can do individual.

Volunteer for everything they have.

There are so many things to do. Do you belong to a church? They usually have community organized events planned.

You can make items or get donations for items for the local animal shelters.  With the price of gas and oil going up, the shelters are in NEED of items such as toys, blankets, food, snacks, leashes, and collars.

Also you can post bulletins around work or your neighborhood and get donations / and start a collection for the US Military. Our Troops and Soldiers, were getting care packages regularly back in 2002, 03, 04, and 05; however since 06 the amount of care packages that are arriving in Iraq, Afganistan and the Persian Gulf have diminished quite significantly.  Go on www.anysoldier.com for info. and it will tell the units that are in need of things, and what they are requesting.

There is always a call for helpers in senior citizens homes, especially the less wealthy ones.

If you are good with computers, or handicrafts of any kind, you could volunteer in such a home to pass on your knowledge. Some young people like to do this because they have no grandparents of their own living nearby.

Or you could go the other way...see if your local hospital has a play group or clowning group for sick children, where you might be able to involve them in activities. If you are in a big city, some of the children might be from further away, so their own brothers and sisters can't visit them too often.

If you love animals you could volunteer with a local animal shelter or wild life rescue organisation (don't take home any orphans to feed without asking your familiy first!)

You will do something good for others with any of these, at the same time widening your experiene of the world and making some good friends.
