I'm not sure of what Kind of apple tree it is. The apples are mostly yellow with streaks of red. The ripe ones are tart, yet sweet. I haven't used any type of insecticide or fungicide on it. The leaves look fine but many of the apples have black spots on the skins. They average about 2" in diameter

  1. An owner of an apple orchard consistently won best apple in show contests where ever he entered the apples.  As soon as the immature apples were big enough, he would remove all the apples from a branch except one.  He would severely cull apples from the best trees in his orchard and allow all the nutrients to be concentrated in fewer apples.  He may have also fertilized, watered and treated the best trees.  So selective thinning of the fruit on the tree may increase the size of the remaining apples.  Another reason for thinning is to prevent massive amounts of developing fruit from breaking branches on the tree.

The black spots are likely signs of insect damage or fungal damage.  Take some fruit to a good plant nursery or the county agriculatural extension agent to see if they can identify the problem and recommend a treatment.

  2. Sounds like you have a bad case of grapes actually.
