I have a 8.5 month old baby that I'm trying to introduce the sippy cup to----she takes it and holds it and everything but she tries to suck it like a bottle and since she has two bottom teeth she chews on it.....

Is it too early for her to start or am I doing something wrong

  1. Persistance pays off when introducing something new. The best thing to do is put something that they really like to drink in the sippy cup and then try try again until they get it. It took about 2.5 weeks for my daughter to get the hang of it. We used the sippy cups that have a soft spout like the nipple on a bottle and it seemed easier for her to start drinking out of it.

  2. Nope. You are doing just fine!

Offer a few kinds of sippy cups to her. Some children like the hard tops others like the silicone tops.

Also: offer her baby juice in the cup instead of her normal formula or breast milk. That way she doesn't reject the cup because she wants the familiar.

The juice flavor may be just the "heyyyy what was that?" that she needs to keep trying the cup!

    Good Luck!

  3. get her the born free trainer cup.  they love it.  i tried several with my son and this one is the key

  4. i think they have sippy cups that have a bottle nipple and you can change it to a regular sippy cupple nipple later. i see them at walmart. but remember, its new to her, so shes gonna explore and play first, later she will learn how to use it.

  5. Mine did the same thing, I started her on the sippy around 6 months, she had 2 bottom teeth at the time (and now, 1 month later, she has 5 teeth altogether!!!), anyway she would only chew on the sippy as well, I bought another sippy cup, a totally different kind of spout, and this one she took to really well. Give her a little time to figure it out, and if she still isn't liking it, try a different "feeling" top. Originally I had bottom one that was rubbery but kinda hard (the Gerber transition cups) and then I switched to a "Nuk" http://www.gerber.com/toddlersite?tmsdir...

and she seems to really love this one. she drinks like 2 of them a day. I bought it at Walmart. They have a ton of different spouts so I would say if the one(s) you have been trying aren't working, maybe try another one out :)

Good luck to you, TONI LYNNE

  6. You are doing everything right-

You can hold it for her.. let her take sips while you hold it the same way you would a regular cup,and then after a few sips let her try.

    Good Luck

  7. I started around that time.  I used the Dr. Brown sippy cup...because it introduces the sippy cup to them...but you still need some what of a sucking motion to get the liquid out of it.  Eventually you can move to other sippy cups

  8. your a little bit early...

if i were you i'd first start by feeding her with it myself [hold it up to her mouth for her] eventually she'll get the hang of it.:D

  9. no this is fine, its just what they do for awhile before they understand that they have to suck and tip it....

this is the perfect age to start that way you can get her off her bottle by one!

make sure you buy they soft  tip cups for beginners. I found that the soft nubby cups were the easiest for my son to use and they are really cheap!

  10. It may be a tiny bit early, but I'd still try. The sooner the better. Just tip the cup up for her for a little while and eventually she'll catch on. good luck.

  11. hmmm i started mine on a sippy cup at 6 months, before he had teeth, and he's used it easily ever since. i dont think it's too early at all for you to try. try putting in some of her formula or breast milk or whatever you're using.
