Question:

How can I get my cat to go toilet outside?

I have 3 cats, one is 6 years and been toilet trained to go outside since a kitten, and the other two are 1 years old. One of the younger ones refuses to go toilet outside. I keep them all outside until around 10pm and they are in and out the house all day.

I've put litter (stones) outside in various borders and soil, but as soon as they come in, this particular cat goes behind our sofa or in a corner somewhere!

My wife is pregnant, and there is a risk with cat f***s so I've now had to resort to putting a litter tray in the house. However, this isn't solving the problem.

Any ideas?

  1. litter tray in bakyard?they arent dogs.dont expect too much.

  2. first, put a litter tray in the place when he goes. then...

when its going to the toilet in its litter tray (lol), quickly run and carry them both outside so that it gets used to going outside.

then try putting the litter tray outside for him to go there him self (without you carrying him)

then when he starts going in the litter tray outside on his own, sprinkle some cat litter into the soil so he can go there instead of the tray. (you may need to carry him there again if he doesnt go there by himself).

then when he does that on his own, just leave out the cat litter!

and then finally he will start going in the soil by himself!

    good luck! x

  3. sometimes when you have more then one cat one of them can be dirty as it is possible that its marking its territory

  4. First of all you need to get the scent out of your floor. If it's carpet, there used to be a cleaner called Zoflora I think that was good.  Perhaps when cleaned put things in these spaces (maybe carrier bags behind the sofa or one of my cats always had a dislike for tin foil) just so that the cat cannot get to the trouble spot.

With regards to the litter tray.  If the cats uses the tray ok indoors then we found the best solution was to gradually move the litter tray towards the back door (maybe just 10cm every couple of days).  Then keep doing this until the tray is on the soil where you want the cat to go. It took a few weeks but worked for us.

If she is not using the litter tray at all.  Firstly make sure that the tray is clean and doesn't have the scent of your other cats, then as soon as you see her starting to mess on the floor quickly pick her up and put her in the tray to finish.  Hopefully you will have the tray nearby if she has a particular spot and you seem to know what time she is going to do it!!

  5. sounds like the cat has got its scent on your carpet so you need to get rid of it - maybe hire a proper carpet shampooer?  suggest putting the litter tray in the area the cat uses, when the cat is used to using it, gradually move the tray towards the outside door, and providing the cat still uses the tray, move the tray just outside the door. Alternatively you can buy" cat scent off" stuff that puts the animal off an  area.   Good luck
