Question:

How can I get my cat to lose weight?

My cat is fat. She isn't like morbidly obese or anything, but she is definitely overweight. We only give her 2/3 of a cup of low-calorie dry food a day, 1/3 in the morning, another in the evening. How can I get her to lose weight? Is there a good way to get her to excercise? She doesn't run loose, for many reasons. Could she be fed less without always being hungry? What should be done?

  1. put it on bumhole workout it works for my cat

    it lost 10 pounds

  2. don't feed her less, make sure that she has lot of access to fresh water and play with her a lot to get more exercise.  Find something that she like, like a laser pointer or feather toy.  Play with her on and off for a few minutes throughout the day.

  3. Talk to your Vet. My 15 year old was overweight and after talking to her Vet and getting a physical done on her, we treated her ailments and changed her diet to what her age called for. It took a bit but she's become healthier and like a kitten again!

  4. Ben-Ben - here's a101 on your cat and what it should be eating

Dry food is out- get rid of it- But Why???   It contains grains that your kitty does not have the enzymes to digest- as a result- they become fat and they may (in many cases) become diabetic- cats are obligate carnivores-  they eat meat not grains- the best food for your cat is wet food and you want one with low carbohydrates - a canned food that is most reasonable in the way of cost is Fancy Feast- but not all of them-there is only eight or so that do not contain the wheat gluten and those are the ones you want- Gourmet Chicken- Turkey and Giblets- Chicken and Beef- Beef- Chopped Grill- Liver and Chicken- Beef and liver- Gourmet Seafood- Savory Salmon-  These have variations but know that any of them that say "sliced" , "minced" , "in gravey" or "chunked",  that they are not what your cat needs-  there is a list of the low carb foods availible on-line - search Janet and Binky's food charts and you will be taken to the site that has information on diabetic cats-  just go to the Janet and Binky's food charts- it is probably under "Diets" - also amny people don't like the mess of the wet foods and cleaning the bowl ect...  I use a sheet of wax paper on a plate or in a bowl and just throw it away when kitty is finished eating - it saves time and work.  I have two cats that were both over weight - 17 and 18 pound cats- they now weigh 11 and 12 pounds after I changed thier diets- good luck

  5. We put our cat on vegetarian cat food and he dropped 10 pounds in about 3 months. His weight management is monitored by the vet. The food is made by medi-cal.

  6. Giving low calorie potato chips isn't the answer. Feeding proper food for the species is, Stop feeding kitty crack

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health

Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.

Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or is it meal or other things? Learn what meal and other things mean here.

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms of food allergies probably from the grains. Constipation? Dry food, not enough moisture. Blockages? Again not enough moisture in the food and you are risking something serious. People on this board say feed fiber but this is a cat not a dog and cats are obligate carnivores unlike dogs an they don't eat cereal and don't need fiber.

The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food (Cats are not naturally big drinkers) but in

Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at all or grains  at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food as it uses a muscle meat as the first ingrediant. 9lives, friskies whiskas are lower grade canned but still better then dry and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods.

Many foods are not mentioned here but if you read the labels you wiull know if it is qualaty. The price offers no guideline.

The optimum food to feed cats has no grains whatsoever, cats have no use for them and many have trouble processing them as well as the carbs. IBD is another disease that is rapidly becoming common amoung cats because of the inappropriate diets being fed.

Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? Why do people constantly repeat this old wives tale and put teeth over the organs like the kidneys?? (I have no clue)   http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bp...
