Question:

How can I get my cat to p**p in his litter box?

Early in the summer we took in a stray cat who was living a very rough life on the street. He's very healthy now and happy in his new home, and doesn't cause any trouble except for one little thing. Although he never pees outside his litter box, he refuses to p**p in it. We don't REALLY mind cleaning it up, but we would certainly prefer it if we didn't have to. I don't think scolding him would do any good because we always find the p**p on the floor way after he's done it. I've just never heard of a cat who'll use a litter box for peeing but not pooping. Any ideas are appreciated.

  1. Try doing what you'd do for a new kitten-- put him in the box, and move his front paws in a digging motion. He'll naturally understand that "Oh, that's where I'm supposed to dig and burry my poo!"-- hopefully. Or you could do what you'd do for a dog. Take him to his poo pile, kind of "shove" his face up to it so he can smell it and say, "No!" Then take him to his box and dig his paws around.

Being that he was a stray and has just come and gone and pooped wherever and whenever he wanted to, you might not be able to break him of the habit.

  2. I would try having 2 boxes.  We had a calico that had to have this type of set up and made it very clear to us!

  3. If the cat is consistently pooing in the same spot, I suggest putting the litter box in that spot.

  4. Your boy would like to have two boxes!

You are very good to take this boy in and never scold him....more cats should find homes like yours!

Litter box problems are very frustrating for all.....human and feline.  Here's a link that you might find helpful:

    Good Luck!

  5. Sit the cat in front of the litter box, then drop trow and p**p in it yourself first so that the cat sees where the p**p is supposed to go, in that box and nowhere else.
