How can I get my cats to "do their business" outdoors and stop them using the litter tray?

My cats now go outside all the time, but they still come in to use the litter tray. I would like them to eventually stop using this and then stop the smell that this sometimes causes. my friends cats "go" outside all the time and they didnt seem to do anything to make them change from the litter box to the outdoors, but my cats just wont!

  1. I wouldn't worry about it too much, the problem will be solved for you when something outside kills them. Seriously, why even have cats if you don't want them inside with you at all? They are almost the equivalent of strays like this.

  2. put the litter box outside for abit and when you see them using it, just take it away. this is what people do to get their cats to use the toilet so i dont see why it wouldnt work this way. good luck

  3. Well since you let them "go outside all the time" they'll probably stop going potty in the house.  In fact, they'll stop going potty outside as well.  Because a dead cat doesn't go potty.

It's only a matter of time till they're hit by a car, poisoned, eaten by a wild animal, shot at, catch a disease from another cat, dismembered by a loose dog.  But hey - at least you won't have to deal with the two minutes of litter scooping you're losing every day in your precious life!

  4. Very good question, and I can help you.Ive had many cats over the years, and theyve always went outside.First thing is to have them neutered/spayed-Cats are very territorial,so they like to"mark" their spots.Next is to have a comfortable yard for them to do their thing.Would you like to take a dump in front of your neighbors???Keep a litterbox for comfort,in case they need it.Gradually move it outside, theyll naturally get it.Dont get frustrated, and definately dont take it out on the cat!!! Itll only make it worse.Talk to your cat;they dont speak english, but youll be suprised at how they know what your saying!

  5. What I would do, is start moving the litter box closer to the door every couple of days. Don't just move it a couple of inches though haha. Try into the next room, then by the doorway, then by their cat flap, then put it outside the door. then take it away. If they keep coming inside looking for it once it's gone, then just keep one(a covered one obviously so it doesn't turn into mud if it rains) outside the door until they stop looking for awhile, and then just take it away again.

As far as letting them outside, if you live in a quiet suburban area, I see no problem with it as long as they have their shots, and are fixed. We have plenty of things that could kill us outside too, but it doesn't mean we stay locked up 24/7.  The only reason my cats can't go out is because we have a very busy road in front of our house and skunks in our yard. Just ignore people.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Move the litter tray outdoors - near the door.
