Question:

How can I get my computer to capture audio from a video camera?

So, basically, I've had this Canon video camera for a few years. It does use tape, but with the help of cables, you can hook it up to the computer and put the videos on there. However, when I go to create a "movie" of the videos on my computer, none of them have audio. It's important audio too, but I connect the same cables and camera into the TV, and the audio works. My computer's sound is on and is working, but it just won't catch what people are saying on the tape. My dad bought a cable to which I can attach the normal red, yellow, and white wires into (like on the back of TVs) and I only have a white and yellow one to connect into those. Should I get another cable to hook into the USB instead? If so, where can I get one that hooks into my specific camera? It's a Canon ES75. Any other ideas? HELP!

  1. The Canon ES75 is a Hi8 camcorder. It is analog - there is no USB cable or port that will connect to it...

According to your description, it seems like you have figured out how to connect the AV cable that came with the camcorder to a capture card in your computer... and I gather that the audio is not making it in past the capture card. Since everything works correctly (video and audio) when you connect to a TV, then I presume you already know that you would connect the camera the same way to the capture card.

This tells me that the capture card audio port is somehow disabled. Since I don't know which capture card it is, it will be tough to trouble shoot... so... if you have already checked all the Control Panel audio settings - and they are set at a mid-level and not muted for audio-in and the capture board's audio-in is active,

Lets move to getting the audio and video into your computer.

The easiest way to do this will be to get an external Analog/Digital Bridge. I will guess that your computer does not have firewire - and has USB only. The Pinnacle Dazzle will be the most common bridge - the camcorder AV cable will plug into the bridge and the bridge plugs into the USB port on your computer.

  2. In order to capture audio from your camera, you must first import the footage into the computer, and on the timeline you will see audio track and video track. you can then delete the video track, and export the audio track to MP3, or AIFF file

  3. Have you tried hooking it up to ur computer with a usp cord and then try using it like a webcam? then you could try taking it like you would a video you will get audio with it
