Hello, I live in Monmouth County, New Jersey. My daughter is 10 and she loves animals. We own rabbits and guinea pigs. She is interested in 4-H. Does anyone know how I would go about getting her signed up to join? I would appreciate any help.

  1. Go to the website:

    http://njaes.rutgers.edu/personnel/unit....

It lists on the site the program associate for 4-H.

    Krzyzanowski, Virginia

    Program Associate, 4-H

    I'd recommend contacting her.

  2. her school should have a program in place. All she needs to do is sign up and pick her projects. If the school doesnt have a program you can call the Dept of Ag in your area and they can help you find the office and you can sign her up there

  3. 4-H is organized on a county basis, and your local county extension office (which handles soil and water conservation, farm services and such) has all the information you need.

It sounds like she would be interested in starting off with a rabbit or cavy project, so when you contact the county, let them know.  They can help direct you to a club close to you that has a rabbit or cavy advisor.

Some 4-H clubs specialize in only one or two animals (some are strictly horse clubs, others market pigs, etc.), but many clubs are organized to give the kids an opportunity to try out new projects.

The way our club is organized is that if a child wants to do a project, someone becomes an advisor.  We have kids doing everything from horses, rabbits and poultry to pot-bellied pigs, goats, scorpions - and our advisor's son is showing baby raccoons and porcupines this year!!  Our advisor has a USDA license and is always trying to find creative ways to increase the public's interest in the 4-H small animal barn.

Aside from learning about animals, your daughter will also have a chance to show and participate in lots of activities and events.  If she stays with it, there are also college scholarships available to 4-H members.

Great organization and terrific way to spend some time with your daughter.

  4. Google it.  The information below came from their website.

  5. What does she like to do? Sign her up for what she really likes to do. My neighbors signed up for 4-H a year or two ago and they are doing the horses. They got so into it that they got their own horses! They built a pasture in their backyard!

Do something that she really likes to do. That's all I can say.

  6. Stonefieldhill said it all. great job and good info.
