Question:

How can I get my hamsters to stop fighting?

I have a black russian hamster and a (I think) blueberry dwarf hamster. I showed the blueberry one to the black russian and he attacked it. They didn't grow up together and aren't the same kind- so is there any way I can get them used to each other so I can put them in the same cage? Or will it always be like this?

  1. no. they must be seperated,

  2. You CAN NOT put dwarf hamsters with any other hamsters. I worked in a vet's office, pet store and recently owned several dwarf hamsters.  Not a good combo.  They will fight to the death.  And male and females will get along until the female gets pregnant, then they will not get along anymore.

  3. Chances are they will never get along.  If they are being this violent now they most likely will continue to want to fight each other.  I mean, chances are they are trying to show dominance.   Hamsters that grow up together have more success of getting along.  However, trying to introduce them when they are older is tricky and most times doesn't work.

I would keep them separate for now.

  4. Your black russian would even attack another one of it's kind. The two hamsters absolutely must be separated.

  5. They may never get alone; especially as they are males.  You should only really keep dwarf hamsters together if they are from the same litter or introduced as pups.  However you could try giving them a bigger cage so more space from each other.  Also try doubling up on everything: water bottles, food dishes, wheels, sleeping places etc and put them at separate ends of the cage.  This way they could have their own territory and have less to fight over.  If the fighting gets really bad and one of them gets badly injured you will have to house them in separate cages; they could still play together when supervised though.

  6. You absolutely HAVE to separate them
