Hi, I'm a jewelry designer of 23 years, and have successfully done exactly what you are asking.

A good first step would be to submit a press kit (including a CD with hi-res images, press releases regarding yourself and any news of your newest pieces or collections, etc.).  Make the folder in which everything is contained memorable--remember, fashion editors receive MANY press kits on any given day, so you ned yours to stand out.

You can submit your email address within your press kit, with the request to send you information on upcoming issues features, so that you can send specific photos that suit their needs.  The more you make and editor's job easy (professionally-done, magazine-quality photos, clear descriptions of the items), the more likely you will become a "go-to" designer when they need items to feature in their magazines.

For more detailed tips, you might consider joining the Jewelers Resource Bureau:  http://www.jewelersresource.com.  It is a group for which you must pay to join, but the tips are invaluable.
