How can I get my money back from a scam artist?

I was a sucker to a guy that sold me a DiVinci sound system which was marked and even advertised in a magazine as being worth $3600. He "cut me a deal" and sold it to me for $400. Just from that info it may seem like I must be a complete idiot, but I am not. His story sounded really legit, and I guess I just trust people too easily. After looking into the sound system and seeing that it is closer to being worth about $40, I really want to get my money back just to show this guy he messed with the wrong person. My plan is to call him and ask if he has anymore that he is trying to get rid of. Upon him agreeing to meet with me again and actually showing up, I will then take note of his license plates, maybe even have some friends help me follow him if he tries to run, and hopefully just basically blackmail him into giving me my money back. I plan on telling him that there must be some law against vending on the street without a license. If that won't get him, I'll just suggest that maybe the cops can look into it more closely to see if the business is legit and while they are snooping around maybe find some dirt on him aside from this shady business. All in all, I just want my money back, but more importantly I want these people to know that I can play their games and outsmart them just as easily as they outsmarted me. I called the guy on the number he gave me to initiate my idea, and it appears to have worked. He actually picked up, remembered who I was, and said that he would see if he could get a hold of some more so he could sell them to me. At this point, I just want some ideas on how I can get this guy to give me my money back. Anyone know the legality of street vending in Plano, TX or have a creative way to mess with this guy?

  1. First off, I am sorry you were scammed.  I would not try to "blackmail" him because if you do so, don't look for the police to help you at all.  Blackmailing is definitely illegal.  Call the local police department and talk to a detective about what happened and let him know that the guy may have more to sell.  Perhaps he is stealing the items.  The police will give you an idea on what way to pursue it from there.

    Good luck in your recovery.

  2. I like your idea.  You can hire an off-duty police officer to stand at your side (he can hide in the beginning) and give the scammer a scare. He will think he is being arrested. /
