Question:

How can I get my son to stop peeing?

No I'm not looking for a way to send my little "angel" into renal failure. Does anyone have any tricks or hints on how to get my 22 month old son to stop taking his diaper off and peeing on the carpet? I take this as a hint that he is ready to start using the potty, he does do that a few times a day. He get an m&m when he sits on the potty and pees, but a few minutes later he has his diaper or big boys off and there he is straining to beat anything and making himself pee on the carpet. I tell him no no and run him back to the potty where he will then just sit there for a couple of minutes and be done. So far all I can say is thank God for the carpet shampooer. Any help?

  1. Instead of having him SIT on the potty, have him stand - he is obviously one of those little boys who like to stand to pee.  Put a cheap plastic mat underneath or a cheap shower curtain.

Maybe have him pee in the toilet and skip the potty altogether.

Have his Daddy talk to him "man-to-man" - "Hey, buddy, big boys don't pee on the carpets you know, real big boys always use the toilet!"

  2. Good job on the positive reinforcement, but you also have to spank him when he doesn't go on the potty. Reinforce the positives.

  3. It takes a lot of persistence. Everytime your son looks likes he has to go just bring him to the potty.

You should bring the potty into the living room so that he associates it with a comfortable place. I did this with my daughter, she was potty trained at abut 2 and a half.

    Move the potty around.

  4. diaper, under dungarees with a sweater on top, so he can't remove it!

until you think he really is ready to train

  5. shut the doors to the rooms with carpet in them. Unless he can open doors of course. Sounds like he thinks it's funny huh? lol.. kids.. the things they will do to get a rise out of you. good luck

  6. reinforce the good and make it clear that his carpet show as it were is NOT acceptable and from now on if he does it then there will be a consequence.

Normal accidents are understandable, but this is deliberate and totally not acceptable.  I'd start with time out if that works for him and if not a good swat on the butt when he does this and a firm "no, we go on the potty" is in order.  He has to learn this display of behavior is not acceptable and will not be allowed to continue.

  7. Try a sticker chart. Every time he pees on the potty, he gets a sticker, but when he pees on the carpet he gets one taken away. Once he fills up the chart he gets a new toy. This has helped me a lot, and i hope it works for you too.

  8. I think you're doing the right thing and handling it exactly like I would.  Sounds like a boy to me- mine liked to pee in strange places for a while too.  This too shall pass.  He is really young to be training at all- awesome that he is using the potty sometimes!  Mine didn't get it AT ALL at that age.  (my daughter did- but my son- FORGET IT!)

The only thing different I tried with my son is a sticker chart, and having him "clean it up" with a washcloth.  I don't know if either of these helped or he just grew out of it to be honest.

And your renal failure comment made me crack up!

  9. Maybe stop letting him and start punishing him for it?

  10. I have a 24 month old and he started the same behavior around 18 months old.  I have to say I don't have a concrete answer.  I know that for my son he keeps on Pull-Ups way more than a diaper.  Around 20 months of age as soon as I put a diaper on it was off.  I suggest getting rid of diapers all together, place a potty in the middle of the playroom, or where he spends most of his time.  If you can keep pants off of him and just have him in underwear.  One tough thing is little boys physically are incapable of holding their pee.  Their muscles just aren't strong enough so if the potty is close you may just have fewer accidents.  Also try a urinal.  They have a portable urinal at http://onestepahead.com.  I hope this helps.

  11. um... make him help clean it up.... or tell him he has 2 have his diaper on unless he is sitting on the potty...
