Question:

How can I get my white area rug clean?

In the most traveled room in our house, we have a white area rug. I know - not the best place to have it. It was left here by the previous owners and I liked it so we left it there. But...it was winter when we moved in, and a lot of walking was done over that carpet - resulting in a lot of dark spots on it. It is a just slightly off-white color, but white nonetheless.

A few weeks back, I used OxyClean in my carpet shampooer, thinking it would remove the stains. The carpet looked great for the first couple of weeks! But to my horror, the stains have started to show up again, and they are the same ones that I thought were gone.

If OxyClean isn't getting the spots out, what will? I have tried dozens of things to fix the problem, and nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any good suggestions? At this point, I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks so much for any help. :)

  1. Maybe try getting the stain steam cleaned by a professional, they will get it out probably but it will cost some quite a bit of money to remove it permanently.

  2. Next time try Resolve High Traffic Carpet Cleaner.

  3. It probably didn't come clean because it is embedded in the fibers and only the surface area was cleaned.  I agree that steam cleaning would probably be best, but a cheaper way is to rent a cleaner from the grocery store.

  4. what do the care instructions say? without knowing the fibre content it is difficult to advise. Wet cleaning will give the best results, but there are the associated risks of shrinkage and possible felting.
