Question:

How can I get over my fear of flying?

Every time I get asked if I want to go on holiday, I have to turn it down because I'm too scared of the flight.

I can't help but feel I'm really missing out and I would really like to stop being afraid. I have dreams about planes bursting into flames in the sky and it is a really big problem for me. I'm hoping I can overcome it this year so I can go on holiday to Portugal.

Please help.

Thank you.

  1. ive been on a plane at least 20 times and nothings ever happened to me, i think you just have to realize that its all inside your head and just because your afraid of the plane crashing that in no way means its going to- your hot by the way

  2. Where does your fear come from? Maybe you could find a cheap flight to Edinburgh or Amsterdam - you can get last minute flights for as little as £20 - and then if you get cold-feet and don't get on the plane you've only lost a small sum of money and you'll be a step closer to getting over your fear.

BTW, it's not being in the air that's dangerous, planes seldom have problems in flight, it's on the ground in the airports that the vast majority of aircraft accidents occur.

  3. by flying Quantas -   ooooh cutting...

  4. Go to France on the Eurostar

  5. One way to get over a fright is to face it. Go on any of the upcoming holiday offers, eventually you should get over your fear. Plus they say theres a greater chance of an accident on the road then in the air.

  6. Contact your nearest airport for a day course.  It's a fear of flying course and they talk through all your fears and let you look in the cockpit.  And lots of other stuff.  I know a few people who have been on one and have since had no problems flying.

    Good luck.

  7. They say that there is much more chance of you being knocked down on the road than ever coming to harm on  a plane.  I hadn't flown for 27 years but last year flew to Australia to see family and that was four take offs and landings.  And yes, I was nervous about it all and amazed to see most people treating the flight like a bus ride. I think the way to approach the whole thing is to treat it as one big adventure and let your nerves create excitement rather than fear.  Once you have done it, you will want to do it again and again  .... I spoke to an air hostess recently and she said that loads of people are scared, just like you .... and she suggests that when you board the plane and sit down, simply tell one of the cabin crew that you are SOOO nervous and they will settle you down ... they are trained for that very eventuality.  Don't let your fear let you miss out!  Good luck ...

  8. I hate flying too. I still do it though cos i AM missing out. I go all over the world. You can't let your fears conquer you. Whats the worst that will happen? You die. Which is what will happen anyway. Anyway, safety in europe is second to none ( excl. Madrid). More chance of dying in a car on the way to the airport. More chance of winning the lottery. Also you can get a sedative from the doctor if you really can't handle it. Just book it and make the decision not to panic. Its as simple as that. Dont panic and you'll be fine.

  9. Best thing would be to just try and force yourself to go through with it. It might help if you were tired, that way you could sleep on the plane and you wouldn't be thinking about it so much.

  10. the only way of getting over your fear of flying is to do it. once you fly, you will see how safe it is. statistics have sown that you are more likely of dying in a car crash on the way to the airport. the only reason it seems bad is because of the media. they over exaggerate everything and showing plane crashes get more attention than a perfect score at a bowling alley. Here is a link showing the statistics of flight safety. Once you do a little research you will see how safe flying really is.
