Question:

How can I get over some of my speech problems like stuttering, and how can I get over my fear of spiders?

I have been having a few problems for a while now and was wondering if anyone knows anyway of solving any of them.

1: I often stutter when I speak to people whether it's over the phone or in person. I really want to know how to get past this because it causes problems if I'm trying to talk to someone because it can sometimes take me a while to say it, I know exactly what I want to say but for some reason I stutter.

2: I have problems for some reason pronouncing words such as four, board, and short, those words come out sounding like fir, bird, and shirt. I cannot seem to make that sound no matter how hard I try.

3: When I talk with people sometimes they ask me if I have a cold even when I don't have a cold, does anyone know what might be causing my voice to sound like I have a cold?

4: I have a big fear of spiders. I know that they really aren't dangerous but for some reason whenever I see one I freak out. I was wondering if there is any good ways of getting over a fear like spiders.

  1. I'd say your best bet is a speech coach and a pet tarantula (a safe one of course)

  2. I am a stutterer, however no one would know.

I use a method called word swap. If it is difficult to say the word I swap it quickly for a different word.

It was really bad in my teens (my stuttering) but if I had to tell people I stutter they would not believe me. Because I've managed to word swap. I hate reading in public for this reason.

It sounds like you need to see a speech therapist that can sort out your problem professionally though.

As for the fear of spider I have that too. I know de sensitization works, exposure to them does help! But I would rather just avoid them!

  3. sound therapy will overcome your communication problem. for your fear:

Analyze the fear. Can it harm you at any way? If it can't, then there is nothing to be afraid of (but still read the rest of the guide, just to be comfortable and completely wipe off the fear). If it can hurt you, keep reading the guide for a solution. For example, a garter snake cannot harm you, it just eats spiders and bugs. If you touch it, you will not die/get severely hurt (even if it bites you, which is not likely). But, rattle snakes, on the other hand, are dangerous and if you touch it, you might get bitten.

Look at what others are doing. For example, you are afraid to ride that totally extreme roller-coaster in the theme park. Look at the ages of people who are riding it (probably 9 to 50). If you are in that age range, examine your own health condition. Consult your doctor for medical advice. If you are healthy and in the correct age range, you can freely ride a coaster without worrying about getting hurt.

Confront whatever it is you're afraid of directly. If you are afraid of harmless spiders in your basement, catch one and hold it in your hand. This can be tough if you are arachnophobic, but try to hold it for a long time until the gross-out feeling is gone. Do that a couple times. If you are afraid of certain action, do steps 1 & 2 and if it's safe, do it.

If your fear is truly dangerous, find a way to treat it. I wouldn't recommend doing previous step in this situation. Although, you can find some safety rules and put yourself in a condition where you can be safe even if the fear is in front of you. Other most important rule here is not to panic. Just act cool and assure yourself that as long as you follow the safety guidelines, your fear is harmless and nothing to be afraid of.

Change the way you think and you change the way you act. You can control your thoughts. Since you're only able to consciously think about one thing at a time, only allow positive thoughts to go through your mind. Whenever a negative thought or fear enters, simply choose to stop it right in its tracks and immediately change that thought to something positive.

Deliberately program right thoughts into your head every single day. This is the best way to change the picture of fear into one of victory.

Realize the best defense from fear is a good offense. What you imagine is almost always worse than the truth. So many times the "truth" you see in your mind is only the truth as you believe it to be. So sometimes the best thing is the very thing you fear, even if you have to do it afraid.

    : )

  4. i dont know how young you are but if youre still in grade school youre teachers should have said something about you see a speech pathologist to help you out. if youre not still see if you can find one and have them help you. my mom is one and she has helped so so many children

now about your spiders i dont know what to do. i have a fear of spiders too but you know its just something you have to live with....or you can see a counselor and maybe they can help you out

I have heard of this from quite a few people and my opinion is that it has to do with being nervous....try and relax.

  6. 1-3 can probably be fixed through a speech class.

A good way to get over a fear is to experience it in a safe atmosphere. Get a harmless spider, and let it crawl around on you for awhile, I know it'll be scary but you can beat the phobia, just remind yourself as you're doing this that it's harmless and there's nothing to fear.
