Question:

How can I get paid during jury duty in B.C.?

I have just been summoned for jury duty for a trial that says it is expected to last 30 days. Here in B.C., missing work for jury duty is considered unpaid leave, so employers are not required to pay wages for days missed. However, I have heard that although not required by law, some employers will pay an employee's wages for the time they miss.

What are some other peoples' experience with having to leave work for jury duty, and what would be a reasonable way to request compensation from my employer for lost wages? For example, will they get a tax break if they compensate me while I'm gone, etc?

Thanks.

  1. It's simple, if you are not being payed by the hour then your boss does not have to pay you for the days you miss.  You are being payed by the city, during those days even if it's crappy pay.
