How can I get passes to see the Excavations below St. Peter's Basilica?

I've tried the "official way" twice, but have been denied twice. I'm looking for helpful insider information, hints, or tricks that might help my chances. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have successfully received permission to visit the excavations.

  1. Hello,

The only way is thru the vatican.va website.  They do not give tickets to resellers or tour guides.  If you are going during high tourist season it will be very difficult to get them.  Try sending your request once a week.  Make sure you give them lots of options for dates and times.  Also, give them your hotel phone number just in case something comes up at the last minute.  If you still can't get a tour, try showing up at the office to see if there are "no shows" that you can replace.
