Question:

How can I get power to my dishwasher?

I just bought a house that originally didn't have a dishwasher so there is not a dedicated electrical hook up for it. The only remedy I can think of is running an extension cord through the cabinets from the dishwasher to the back of the refridgerator where there is an outlet. Total distance is about 15 feet. Is this advisable or should I have an outlet installed.

  1. Ditto Irv S.  Extension cord running through cabinet walls is a code violation in most places, and a tragic accident waiting to happen in an area where a pipe might leak.

And when you have the outlet installed, make sure it is a Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) type outlet.

  2. Well normally dishwashers are hardwired.meaning they are wired right into a circuit or there is an outlet directly behind it and out of sight. However if you want to there is no harm in using an extension cord to run it.Just get one of the more heavy duty types.

  3. 1. The dishwasher + the refrigerator, (when it runs),

    would probably overload that circuit.

    2. An extention cord running through cabinets is

just begging for trouble when a high load item like

    a dishwasher is involved.

    Have the outlet installed.

  4. no problem at all buddy, just do it yourself
