I have found 3 black widow spiders around my house. 1 in the garage and 2 underneath our kids little plastic pool in the backyard. We live in a newer neighborhood in the city...is that normal? I am terrified of spiders.

  1. You could kill 'em. Or bug-bomb it.

But you could also buy blue mud daubers, they primarily hunt and kill Black Widow Spiders, but don't attack humans, they are a little blue wasp. You can even let them fly around your house, with no problems.

  2. Are you sure these were black widow spiders?  They most often make webs in undisturbed places, such as piles of firewood or lumber, below eaves, in crawlspaces, and in garages.  The spiders beneath your children's pool were likely some other type.

Regular attention to destroying visible spiders, webs, and egg sacks will control them.  Keeping your yard and house clear of clutter will help.  Teaching your children how to identify and avoid them is the best prevention against getting bitten.  Below are two links with more info.

  3. Find a black WIDOWER!   LOL   All kidding aside I would check with the  Human Services dept in your area.  We have Dept. of Environmental  Services connected  to our State government .  They could direct you to insect management I'm sure...then go from there.

  4. There are spider traps that you can buy, or you could call a pest control service, they should be able to help.

  5. To get rid of black widow spiders be very careful when doing so.   Success can come at a very easy manner.  Take a napkin and quickly grab it and squeeze it to death. I suggest wearing gloves.  If you are brave enough i would take one of those lighters that have an 5-10 inch length on it and light it on fire.

  6. Raid or wasp spray. Wasp spray is very effective in knocking down strong insects.
