I know there are a lot of products that you can buy off a shelf which would be helpful, but are there any easy things i can do to clear up my face?

What about food? How does that effect the skin?

  1. make your own cleansers with yogurt and other stuff, it's real easy. you can look it up on google!

  2. Drink lots of water and have a healthy diet is a good first step. If you can't do the healthy diet, try a multi vitamin supplement to make sure you get all the nutrients you need!

Second, have a good skincare routine.

       - Wash your face with warm soapy water (you can use spot soap if you want)

       - Cleanse. You can use face wipes, those spot wipes, cotton wool and bottle cleanser... anything similar to that.

       - Tone. Toner comes in bottles and you use it with cotton wool. It gets rid of excess oils in your skin. I think you can also get specialist anti-spot stuff like this if you prefer.

       - Splash your face with cold water now to close pores. You know how stuff expands when it's hot, and shrinks when it's cold? Your skin does that so when your skin shrinks back down all your pores (the little holes in your skin) close up and that stops dirt getting back in. (A spot is when dirt gets in and then you get an infection in the pore)

       - Finally you need to moisturise. I know what you're thinking - "Why do I want to put greasey stuff on my skin when I'm trying not to have greasy skin?" Washing the face like this dries the skin out, and when it's dried out it goes all flaky (which you don't want anyway) and then to stop it getting all cracked and dry the body produces even more oil than before to make it moisturised again... and you get more spots etc etc. You just end up in a vicious cycle lol. So you need a very light facial moisturiser (I use vitamin E moisturiser which I think's very good for me... find out your skin type to see what's best for you) and apply it lightly to your face.

      - Finally, if you use any spot creams... just apply it after all this. Personally, I wouldn't waste money on spot treatments until after I tried this basic routine with simple products. Seriously, Cleanser, Toner, and Moisturiser (They usually can be found together on the shelf) costs less than £5 together which is much cheaper than spot treatments and lasts AGES.

If you want to try something extra, you can buy a tube of deep cleansing facial mask which you use once a week. It keeps your skin fresh and cleans out any deep impurities. I use a clay one and it's lasted a while and it cost me £1.50...

Most importantly though... just make sure to drink lots of water... it's meant to be really good for the skin.

  3. Job-

It has been recently discovered that your insulin and glucose  levels in your body are key as to whether or not you will get pimples. I have just started a regimen for diabetics and my skin has finally cleared up! And it did not take forever more like two weeks! You are not going to improve your skin condition by drinking more water. That's a myth. Ditto water increasing the filtration function of your kidneys-you get the same amount of toxins in a larger volume of urine.

So following a low -GI diet will rid you of those nasty beasts pronto!

    Good luck!

PS use a mild soap- I use and love Cetaphil  no facecloth  too harsh! just your fingers warm water to wash and rinse with cool to close your pores back up. Pat skin dry with fluffy towel. Again, no rubbing!

    Diet causes pimples

    Thursday, 26 October 2006

    RMIT University

Acne sufferers will soon be able to clear away their pimple creams, thanks to ground-breaking research by an Australian research team.

The researchers have found that what we put in our mouths can either cause or cure pimples.

The research team, led by Associate Professor Neil Mann from RMIT University’s School of Applied Sciences, has discovered a solid link between acne and diet.

"We think we've come across a way to alter your diet in a very healthy way that will alleviate the symptoms of acne and at the same time will make you a lot healthier," Associate Professor Mann said. The study is expected to most benefit adolescents, of whom about 90 per cent suffer from acne.

The diet study was based on observations in non-industrial societies where no acne exists until the teenagers start eating western foods.

Associate Professor Mann and his team spent more than two years studying metabolic changes resulting from altered glucose and insulin levels due to diet and related these to changes observed in the skin and known to cause acne.

Associate Professor Mann and PhD researcher Robyn Smith, in conjunction with staff from the Department of Dermatology at Royal Melbourne Hospital, recruited 50 boys and divided them into two groups.

One group consumed a typical teen diet of sugary snacks and processed foods, while the other followed a more natural diet higher in protein and with low-GI foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and legumes replacing the normal high-GI foods such as potatoes, rice, white bread, cakes, biscuits, soft-drinks and sugary snacks that elevate blood glucose levels and insulin levels so dramatically.

"You have to have that lifestyle change and not expect the magic bullet," Dr Varigos said.

There are hundreds of acne products on the market, but Dr Varigos says this study proves the best medicine for your face and your hip-pocket is food.

"Acne is a condition that can be treated totally,” Dr Varigos said. “Teenagers don't have to wait to grow out of it -that is a wrong conception." The study showed impressive results in just 12 weeks.

"The acne of the boys on the higher protein-low GI diet improved dramatically, by more than 50 per cent, which is more than what you see with topical acne solutions," said Associate Professor Mann.

“A diet high in processed foods pushes glucose and insulin levels higher, exacerbating the problem, but low-GI foods do the opposite. The mechanism and the results are as clear as day.”

  4. Yes I believe that food plays a big part in pimples. Avoid greasy or high fat  foods, especially cheese and milk. The hormones given to cows to help them produce more milk can cause your body to produce to much facial sebum secretion. Dont believe me try an experiment. Eat nothing but brown rice for a few days, take a blood cleansing herbal combination, drink plenty of water, and watch your complexion clear up. Then eat a big chunk of cheese, or chow down on some pizza, chocolate bars, a cheese steak hoagie, and watch the pimples appear like mushrooms after the rain. Sugar is another cause of pimples. It feeds the bacteria that aggravate skin conditions, and it is converted to fat to be stored in the body. I agree with the other responses about a healthy diet and good nutrition. If your going through puberty, it may take a few years to totally clear it up, keep experimenting, doing research, and watching what you eat. Do not become anorexic as my sister did, that will clear up your skin and stunt your growth and maybe kill you.

  5. Drinking plenty of water will help a lot. In terms of whether food has an impact, its been debated. Some say that a lot of greasy food and chocolates and stuff leads to pimples, other people say it doesn't. So, its hard to say. But drinking plenty of water will help wash the yucky stuff away and increase your chances of clear skin.

  6. you could make a natural scrub for your face with oatmeal - get the instant variety - is finer - you could mix  a little lemon juice into it but careful around your eyes

Mostly acne is in response to the bodys hormones and some find antibioltics good, but my son found adding some zinc tabs to his diet was good and helped it to clear up completely. The modern diet is quite zinc deficient as our food is mostly grown in zinc deficient soils now

  7. wash your face with Noxzema.... you by by it over the counter.

  8. I have a son whose really struggling with acne right now. Here's what I've learned so far:

Be careful of the medicated cleansers. If you dry your skin out too much, your body will produce more oils to compensate and then you get worse breakouts.

The best thing to do is figure out what gets your skin balanced. Try washing it each morning and night with Dove white soap. Make sure you're only using warm water, not hot and rinse a LOT. If you tend to have oily skin, try witch hazel on a cotton ball at night (it's usually with the peroxide and rubbing alcohol at the store). It's astringent and helps prep your face for a light, oil-free moisturizer which you should use each night. You may have to try a few to figure out which one works best for you. I'd recommend googling "free samples" and get as many as you can to try before you buy.  To get rid of a pimple quickly, put a little honey and a band-aid on it overnight. Weird but it works! Honey has antibiotic properties  and you can also use it with yogurt to make a nice facial mask once a week.

  9. There are lots of reasons people get acne and lots of ways of treating it, but I know for me Proactiv solution has worked wonders.  It IS expensive and you have to order it off the internet and it is a routine you have to get used to everyday, but I have gotten a lot of compliments on my skin when I do use it.
