  1. moth balls

  2. we have had them for years - think they are coming from behind the bath panel - we intend to get a free standing bath so I can live with them for now.  They don't transmit disease so I'm not that bothered.

They are detritus feeders which means they will eat just about anything so bits of dust etc, keep your carpets/flooring vacuumed and or washed regularly, apparently they love cellulose based stuff which is in a lot of products like shaving foams.  We found by accident that fly spray kills them.  It was residue on a laminate floor where we'd sprayed a wasp a few days previously.  So we went round the edges of the bathroom floor and our hallway with a small wiping of spray - we've hardly seen one since and there was quite a high body count to start with.  The floors we treated were slate and cork so hard surfaces, not sure how you'd cope with carpets.  I tried to find an eco way of dealing with them but couldn't find any info on the net so if anyone knows of anything I'd love to know.

  3. They feed on household dust (discarded skin) and crumbs.  If you keep your house spotless, you won't get silverfish.

A surface insecticide like "Creepy Crawly Spray" kills them.  Spray around the edges of carpets and any exposed cracks in the floor.  If you've got them in your food cupboards, empty the cupboards and wash everything (contents and shelves) with hot salt water.

  4. Good words from "old know all".

Something else that's good for such pests is sprinkling Borax powder around baseboards and under cabinets, or Diatomaceous Earth.
