  1. Algae needs sunlight and nutrients to grow, so restricting these will reduce its build up. If you can add any shade, or just surface floating plants, such as water lilies, this will cut down growth.

Ensure that water run off from your land is prevented too, as this will bring nutrients in.

Any plants in the water will compete for nutrients with algae too, and submerged pond weeds will remove nutrients and remain mostly invisible.

Ensure that all routing debris is removed, as this will just increase nutrient levels.

Finally you can get additives for ponds that will kill and control algae- some are fish and wildlife friendly, so are better used than others.blanket weed is a particular type of algae with long thin filaments and barley straw extract can be used, or just immerse barley straw in the water - i prefer the extracts as its no fuss immediate and doesnt need removal later. Manually remove any blanket weed first, by twirling around sticks etc.  For general algae problems, use other treatments as well as working on the cause of the problem - light and nutrients entering your pond.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

  2. Barley straw is a natural way to keep pond water clear. It is best put into the pond in early spring before the water warms up.

If you live in the countryside you will be able to get some from a local farmer otherwise it is available from aquatic and garden centres.

  3. I have tried many different things over the years, and nothing really worked. This year I put in some Tetra Pond Algea Control, that I picked up at Petco. I treated the pond twice and this stuff really worked! It took about 2 weeks to clear up, but my water is crystal clear now. Try it, good luck!

  4. jump in the pond  and re-emerge as the Green Algae man!

get a big fishing net and clear it out by hand is the best bet , then i suppose you have to treat the pond .

  5. Put some barley straw in a mesh onion bag with a stone for weight, put it in the pond, this has worked for me.

  6. Copper sulfate

  7. I have the exact same problem, and blanket weed. You can buy many different treatments for your pond. In my opinion I would just keep on cleaning the filters and removing it physically.

  8. Aeration. Also you can dump some copper sulfate in your pond for a one time kill off.
