How can I get rid of yellowjackets that have a nest in a bag of fertilizer?

I have a bag of fertilizer that I sat out on my apartment complex patio as I was going to use it to pot an indoor plant. A few weeks ago I started seeing yellow jackets going in and out of the bag and chewing the plastic off but I didn't know where the actual nest was. This morning I went out to close the bag and throw it away so they would stop coming on my patio and when I reached down to close the bag I noticed a TON of them inside the bag and I'm thinking the nest is inside (I didn't stay out long enough to see as they all started coming out of the bag after that). What is the best way to get rid of them??

  1. Believe it or not I have had the same problem, I got a trash bag ready and at nite when they aren't so active I quickly picked up the fertilizer and got it into the bag closed it and tied it. Set it at the end of the drive on garbage day and trash collectors hauled it away. Do it quickly, with an escape plan, and a bucket of bravery.

  2. You may want to call an expert, yellow-jackets can be dangerous, and sting multiple times.  If you want to try yourself, get a can of wasp and hornet killer, Go early, early in the morning.  While the sun is just rising, and still partially dark, but light enough to see.  They are much less active in the morning.  Spray the whole can into the opening from at least 5ft away. Run!  Be careful.

  3. Lord! I do hope that it's a small bag......  I think the others have the right idea in covering it with a STRONG garbage bag and remove it from your property.  SAFETY FIRST.  If you don't think you can handle the situation, get someone else to do it.  Maybe a professional.....  I've never been stung by one.  And I don't want to find out if it's worse than a bee sting or not!  Good luck to you.  BTW, Home Depot has there bee/wasp spray on sale right now.
