How can I get smoke off a wall?

The wall above our fireplace has a black tinge because of the smoke. How can I get this off?

  1. We have a wood stove and I know what you are going through. The best thing that I have found to use it hot water with Dawn dish washing liquid and a soft scrub brush or wash cloth. You could even try ammonia mixed with water, but don't mix too strong and ventilate the area well. You can put a fan in the window to suck out the fumes if needed.

  2. Use TriSodium Phosphate (TSP).  Follow the instructions on the container.  I know it is used by professionals for cleaning up after fire damage.
