  1. check craigslist, they have postings for pickup of free furniture

Goodwill and the Salvation Army will have cheap stuff, that if you give it a little TLC can be great.

Ask freinds, relatives, neighbors, anyone they may stuff in their basement/storage they want to get rid of.

Usually when claiming FREE stuff, you should be prepared to pick it up, its rare to have people give it to you and deliver it ( unless its family)

  2. Crazy:  Go to Goodwill store they have all kinds of furniture at very low prices.

  3. I assume you mean that you cannot afford to pay retail.

See if your town/area has something called "freecycle", an on-line service in which people seek or offer lots of things, including furniture.

Yard sales are good sources for cheap, but sometimes good furniture.  Salvation army stores may also offer furniture.

Cruise the nieghborhood on trash day -- especially in affluent neighborhoods.  People throw out perfectly good stuff -- especially the rich.  Don't be afraid of a little damage -- you can fix most any wood furniture.

  4. To use Freecycle, go to www.freecycle.org    It's easy to find out if your area has a group, and easy to sign up.  Freecycle uses e-mail to notify members of what's available, what's taken, etc.

  5. The above suggestions ... Freecycle, Craigslist, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Yard/Garage sales, flea markets, church & community tag sales/rummage sales ... are great!

In fact, almost any used piece of furniture can be updated, sometimes with just a little paint (and imagination)!

Before you buy something used, or accept something free, though ... make sure you like it enough to want to use as-is or put the work into fixing it ... and make sure it's in good enough shape.  A loose s***w or scratched surface is easy to repair ... a missing leg or torn upholstery, maybe not!

It's not a bargain if it's just worthless junk, but with a little creativity you can make someone else's castoffs into one-of-a-kind originals ... and cheap, too!

ADDED:  At flea markets, tag sales, garage sales, etc., you can always offer LESS than what the seller is asking ... it's expected, in fact!

Also ... late in the day, people having yard sales and groups holding rummage sales will often GIVE stuff away just to get rid of it.  It doesn't hurt to ask!
