I'm a gospel singer having a little trouble getting out there and getting my cd done, but I decided that I should go ahead and try to find some gigs that way me and my background singers and musicians can start rehearsing and performing. How can I get some gigs though?

  1. Brian couldn't have said it better.

If your good people will find you. I'd add that playing the open mic gigs as Brian said will also give you a chance to see what an impartial audience thinks of your singing.

    Be prepared for some criticism.

  2. Visit open jams in the area. A number of years ago, I decided I wanted to start gigging again. I went to an open jam in the Spring/Woodlands area. I believe it's called The 19th Hole. That was the last time I played for free.

Visit jazzhouston.com to find other area jams.

You can start rehearsing without gigs. In fact, you should be practicing already so that when you DO get an opportunity, you're ready.

Get some head shots made up.

Record a demo, even if it's just a "scratch" or a live recording.

    Start knocking on doors.

    Post an ad on craigslist.com

If you don't have a myspace account, get one as a "band".
