One of the things I did to become an exchange student to Latvia was I campaigned my local business' and told them if they would contribute and sponsor my trip. I would do promotion work for them when I returned. I would also suggest asking your local church or even your school might be willing to dish out some cash for you. Another great way to raise money would be to hold a fund raiser like a spaghetti dinner or car wash. If you think that's lame, you could also throw a party and charge a cover...call it your going away party. There are many different ways to raise money, you just have to be motivated.

It is illegal for you to solicit donations.  It would be better if you had a church or some other not for profit agency sponsor you. They could then solicit donations for you.
