She doesn't remember what it is it's just in her computer and it connects automatically with the WEP in Windows Vista. She wants me to be able to use the wireless network too but when you open up the configuration box in her computer it is an 8 digit password but it in asterisks and we don't know what to do and we don't want to remove it becasue if it someone goes out of the computer memory then she won't be able to connect. 1. I would suggest that you reset your router...there should be a button on the back that, when depressed for 5 seconds, resets the whole thing.

It has a default password, and usually by default the wireless is not protected.

You can log onto the Routers config page by logging in to the routers Administration adress, for a Linksys (and some other) routers, it is http://192.168.1.1

Im not sure of the default router pages for alll router but for linksys (if your router is a linksys router) the default usermane and password for the Router administration is "admin" and the password is also "admin"

Onmce connected to this you can create a new password for the router.  It would help to have soemone who knows a bit about the different encryptions as well, as there are many different options.

  2. if it were me, I would get rid of Windows Vista and install windows XP

professional 2007 service pack 2 (SP 2) Vista is having a lot of problems that can be costly to fix.  again, that's just me.
