Question:

How can I get the cutter out of my over-tightened router collet chuck?

I borrowed an ELU router and over-tightened the chuck because on my old router the cutter had a tendency to slip and drop into the workpiece. Now I want to change cutting tools and I can't get the old one out. I have completely removed the clamp nut. There is little to grip on the parallel sided cutting tool and the whole thing is jammed solid. HELP!

  1. Try spraying some silicon spray or INOX and gently tap out no metal just plastic or wood

  2. so are you saying the collett and bit are lodged in,and youve removed the main nut???????

  3. Put a drop of 3-in-1 oil or the like on it and tap gently with a peice of plastic or wood.  Tap in different directions, it should loosen up.

  4. First spray some WD-40 into th ecollet.

Then try putting a pair of pliers around the bit and tapping the pliers (not the cutter) up and out with a hammer. The cutter should come up with the increased pressure.

  5. Fit the collet into a hex nut (1/2" probably), then gently tap the bit out using a drift pin or flattened punch.

  6. when I got a router bit stuck I put a leather glove on and pulleded the bit trying to not touch the cutting edge.  Then with the other hand I tapped the  side of the collet with a s***w driver handle or something similar.  This will jar it and break the seal.
