How can I get the terrible smell out of the closet?

So I recently moved into a new apartment and the broom closet just off the dining room smells awful. I keep a large garbage can in there and I can only assume that the people who lived there before me waited for everything to rot before bringing it to the dumpster outside. The smell is so terrible that I urge when I open the closet door. I have tired air fresheners and so far nothing has worked...Please Help!!

  1. I am guessing you keep it closed all the time??? YOu need to let it air out, and maybe scrub the walls and floors with some really good cleaner, bleach or something.

    Good luck!

  2. Let it air out.  Disenfect it with pine oil.  Put a couple open baking soda boxes in there.

  3. steem cleaner?

  4. You need something that will absorb the odor rather than mask it. I would try something like "odor genie" or just plain baking soda....just let it sit and change it every so often. In the meantime, I would say something to your landlord....those aren't considered "move-in" conditions.

  5. mop it up really good. Leave a box of baking soda in there to absorb the odors and change it out every month or so.  Also try the air spray oust. let it air out really good after you mop. put a trash can with a lid on in there, that may help as well.

  6. i would mop really good in that area with bleach. also open up a box of baking soda and just leave the baking soda in there. and if its carpet get the apple cinnamon carpet freshener and put it down  wait for a while before u vacume it up.put an apple cinnamon air freshener  in there put about 3 of them in there if its that bad.

  7. Get some activated charcoal.  My mom keeps some in her closets to keep them from developing odors.  You should be able to find it in the pet/fish section of most stores.

  8. I would mop the area with a good disenfectant... Use HOT water and leave the area OPEN to dry!  If you have a fan use that to circulate air in the closet.. Once the area is dry.. . I would get a container of baking soda and leave it in there to absorb odors... Change every three months...
