  1. As mentioned you need a Bluray player that has analog preouts on the back of the player and your reciever has analog pre-ins.  You hook up the corresponding connections (Center to Center, Left Main to Left Main and so on).

    Then in the Bluray player setup you need to set the audio to PCM (not bitstream) this tells the player to decode the audio signal and send it via Pulse Code Modulation to the reciever.  Where the reciever will just add amplification duties and you will get lossless audio.

    One thing to also remember is that using PCM alanog cables will effect Bass Managment, so you may notice a decrease of sound to your subwoofer by as much as -10db, so calibrate your speakers after connection and increase the bass in the recievers sub output.

    This connection is best used for people who have recievers or preamps without HDMI and still want to get lossless audio.

    There is no difference in sound quality between PCM lossless and Bitstreamed lossless.


  2. You must have the correct type of blu-ray that decodes the audio and you need not 6 but 8 cables (for 7.1) to do it right, as well as a receiver that will let you have that many for a input.  

  3. So long as the Blu-Ray player has the outs and your receiver or amp has the ins, you can. Most Blu-Ray players internally decode Dolby TrueHD, but only a small majority decode DTS-MA.

  4. You need a player capable of decoding interally the HD audio formats. You'll notice these will have typically 8 individual RCA connectors on the back of them for the decoded analog audio. You will then connect however many your receiver supports(5.1, 6.1 or 7.1) to the 6/7/8CH analog inputs on your receiver if your receiver has these. Set your receiver to the input for the direct analog input and set your player to decode the HD audio formats. You will then get the uncompressed audio tracks.

    Make sure not to confuse 6/7/8CH analog inputs with 6/7/8CH preamp outputs. The latter is for using a external discrete amp and will look very similar to the aforementioned inputs.
