How can I give away fancy pet rats? We couldn't sell them and now they're breeding fast.

The only people who want them are feeders and we don't want to do that.

  1. Well, learn to determine their genders, and separate them! Research on the proper age to separate them, so there's NO chance of pregnancy!

Perhaps look for a local shelter/rescue to help find homes for them!

  2. SEPARATE THE MALES AND FEMALES!!! What are you waiting for?? I do not wish to be rude, but seriously, what are you thinking? The simple act you have to do to put an end to all teh breeding is split them all up. here http://www.ratz.co.uk/sexingrats.html

And dont abandon them at a pet store, anyone off the street will buy them and do god knows what with them. Also, do not just dump them at a shelter, they are over crowded as it is. Try putting up ads in newspapers or online. Offer them for free, but ask the people to send pictures of their cages and such so you know they aren't just lying to get free feeder rats. Also, make sure you give the rats in at least pairs (same sexed!) since rats should not live alone.

  3. I'm sorry but that was very irresponsible.

First thing: SEPARATE the females and males...They are breeding with their siblings?! That is disgusting! Do you really need to ask that question...How old are you?!

Second:  Put up on-line ads and flyers to sell them. Ask a small adoption fee like 8.00 or something and tell them to bring a cage with them to pick it up in. DO NOT sell them to pet stores or dump them at a shelter.

This will teach you not to breed pets when you don't already have homes for them...

Sorry to be rude but it makes me angry when people just breed any animal they have and create a whole new bunch of unwanted animals in the world.

  4. you are being very irresponcible by letting them breed like that. i think you should separate the boys and the girls TODAY  and stop this nonsense.....

  5. i really want one. i really wish i could help you out. if you live close to Sarver PA, (its near Pittsburgh)  i would love one. the only problem would be my parents. :( 14y/o need more freedom. if you could send me an email telling me where you live, i could give it a shot and see.

  6. Well, as i'm sure you've recieved enough negativity..i'll bring some good thoughts.

First, seperate the rats -females and males. If you don't know how, take them to a vet whole will do it for you. Look online under 'how to s*x a fancy rat with pictures'.

After you do this, consider taking them to the humane society. Put a free online ad in pet classfieds or wit hyour local paper, but put down interview required. Meet people before you give them away. If they are devoted, they'll do this. Look up for a rodent rescuein your area.

Depending on how many litters you have, you may want to consider euthanasia.

  7. It was really stupid to buy rats and breed them. You will VERY quickly have a major infestation on your hands (less than 30 days). I used to work with rats in a lab, and they breed very, very fast. It's great that you don't want to give them to feeders, but you should've thought about that before. They may be your only option. Pet stores can't buy from the public any more. They have to go through certified breeders.

  8. separate the females and the males and don't allow them to breed any more.

Usually pet stores will take them to sell for pets not feed especially if they can be handled easily.

Do you have specific rats or just common ones?  Try different stores.  Even if they will only exchange them for rat block or bedding it is better than over breeding.
