How can I give back to the world, and still pay my bills?

I want to help the world somehow. I guess what I'm really asking is, is there like some government-like program where I can get payed to help people in some way, as it were, without having to move to Kenya? PLEASE don't be insulting folks, I'm making an effort to try to help the world a bit. I'm just an average guy. I really don't have time to volunteer outside of work, and don't have money to donate. I'd like to be able to make a small living just helping the world somehow. Is there anything like that out there? And I don't feel like working at McDonald's is really much of a public service. Thank you for your thoughts.

  1. That is indeed a good question and I am sure plenty of people are asking themselves this question in one way or another.

It isn't fair that some people work and live in a part of the world where there is over abundance while the vast majority of others don't and that makes millions of us feel at odds with our consciences,..which is absolutely normal.

The only real way that you can truly help is by ditching all guilt this provokes, because you did most certainly not create this situation and the world is as it is by no fault of your own in any possible way.

One of the most revered profets in religion goes by the name Jesus. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not the religious type! But Christians and Muslims recognize his authority, no contest, and that adds up to 4.1 billion people on this earth accepting that his teachings point in the right direction.

So even if I'm agnostic, it would be extremely presumptuous on my part to discard 4.1 billion opinions, as that is more than 4 people in 5 that walk this earth.

The point I'm trying to make is that Jesus once said: "Heal Yourselves!"

    1) If we didn't have the means to do this, he would not have suggested this.

    2) He said this at a point in his life when he got tired of people continuously asking him for a miracle cure.

So, in regards to your question and in the light of Jesus's suggestion, I would answer the following:

    a) Start by making yourself happy.

    b) Find whatever it is you like doing most

    c) Invest yourself in this activity 1000% and try to become the best

This will have many surprising consequences:

Your own positive vibrations will amplify other positive vibrations in this world and boy does the world truly need this!

You will be ditching the guilt. ( A negative vibration)

You will start making money faster than you can possibly imagine, because when you are the best at something, people will literally FIGHT their way to your door to buy from you. (Whether it be goods or services related to know-how)

You most certainly will not be an "average" guy any more.

May favorable winds fill your sails!

  2. Well, there is a thing you can do... why dont you work for a not-for -profit- organization? You get your salary, the employers arent greedy... its a win win situation!!

  3. There are jobs available today at your local Child Protective Service office.  THey are always short-handed.  If you can stand to see children in sad circumstances, you will be hired. You can go to any of the CPS "group homes" to see what the work entails.  You get paid to live in a home with 3 or 10 children whose parents are  in jail.   You have to be first up in the morning but your work is fulfilling and you get paid.  .

  4. Public service (government) jobs are like that--not much money but you serve a purpose. For federal jobs, the process is tedious and can take over a year, but once you're in, you're in, and there are opportunities for raises and advancement.

Habitat has jobs in this country, not just building houses, but web sites, organizing materials, doing tours, etc. Most other non-profits have regular office-type support workers, too. One of my cousins is an accountant for a non-profit. The work is much the same, but the cause is different.

BTW, as a Christian, I don't agree with the interpretation of Jesus' words given above, but appreciate the thought.
