  1. why do you want your child to have a learning disability?

  2. Your local health Department should be able to steer you in the right direction.

    Good Luck.

  3. If you have concerns, talk to your child's teacher. You can talk to the Special Education supervisor also. The SPED department tests kids when necessary. Maybe your child is a slow learner which would qualify for some services at school. The school usually has contracts with specialists, or they are employed by the district, that will test the child. You could also contact the child's doctor and ask what they suggest you do.

  4. How old is your child, and what kind of learning disability do you suspect she has?

I would start with your daughter's teachers and her pediatrician.  Not every kid who is having trouble in school has a "learning disability", per se ... many have attentional disorders ... that's a whole different thing.  Some children may have a medical condition (allergies, vision problems) which can be treated.

Talk to the teachers and listen to what they say.  Then schedule a visit with your daughter's pediatrician, perhaps not for a diagnosis, but to rule some things out ... and to make sure there's no medical basis for her difficulties.  You can't do much on your own without doing these 2 things first.

  5. Without knowing what learning disability your child has and the age of your child it is difficult. The first thing to do would be to gather as much evidence as you can on your child and why you think she has a learning disability. You can then either ask the school to assess her by asking for a common assessment which will involve the educational psychologist assessing her or you can take her to see your doctor.

  6. Schools do NOT do testing to diagnose learning disabilities. They ONLY do testing to determine eligilbity for special education servcies.

Even though some disabilities could show in the testing, it will not be 'diagnosed'.

  7. Talk to the class teacher, headteacher, senco of the school.Ask  if she is behind the other children in her class. How old is your daughter?Has she just started school?
