  1. 1) Ask him

    2) Ask social security...Perhaps you have an overwhelming reason for wanting to know it

    3) Ask a Private Investigator to find it

    4) If he is deceased, check the SSDI (Social Security Death Index)

    5) If he was a veteran, his SSN is all over the web; the VA made certain of that!

    6) Ask a former employer of his

    7) Ask a utility company (electric, gas, phone, etc.)

Believe it or not, everyone's SSN is on the net; it is just knowing HOW to find it!

(I found both my Mom's and my Dad's...On the SSDI.)

  2. This site--http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bi...

has the letter (SS-5) below to get your father's SSN:

    "Date of request:

    Social Security Administration

    OEO FOIA Workgroup

    300 N. Green Street

    P.O. Box 33022

    Baltimore, Maryland 21290-3022

Please send me a photocopy of the actual application for a Social Security card (Form SS-5--Social Security Number Record Third Party Request for Photocopy) filed by the person listed below. **

I obtained this information from the Social Security Death Master file at RootsWeb.com, Inc. who obtained it from the Social Security Death Master file, originally compiled by the Social Security Administration.

My understanding is that the fee is $27, when the Social Security number is provided or $29 if the Social Security number is unknown or incorrect. Enclosed is a check or money order for $___________, made payable to the Social Security Administration.

    Thank you for your assistance."

**put your father's name in here, plus what other info you have. Then send the appropriate fee to the address given and you should be able to get his number, but--as Genevieve and the others have  said--do NOT do this if he is still living!!

  3. Oh no, no, no, no, no. Don't play with finding people's SSNs and trying to use them to track someone down. There are some pretty significant federal laws involved if you do...and people get in real trouble for it all the time. If you're trying to find your long-lost father, then follow the records. If he owns a house in this country, it will take all of 10 minutes to find him. But if you start snooping with that number, you'll set off flags with everyone from your ISP to the Treasury department and will end up getting yourself on a watch list that you don't want to be on.

  4. If he is living, you can't.

If he is deceased and was drawing social security at time of death, he will be on the social security death index.  FamilySearch.org and Rootsweb are 2 freesites with the SSDI.
