How can I hang a good-sized set of wooden shelves in drywall?

I have a set of wooden shelves I'd like to hang. Its three wooden shelves built together- about 3 feet square. Its good a pretty good heft to it, so I need to find a sturdy way to hang it. Brackets won't work because of the shape, and the wood is only half an inch thick, so I'm not sure if I could attach something to it to hang it. Its hand made, so it didn't come with any kind of mounting hardware. How can I hang it so it will support its own weight and the weight of what I put on it?

Without a picture, it's hard to imagine.  If there is a straight line along the bottom, you could nail into the wall studs a small piece of square wood - say 1" x 1" and 24" long - to give the shelf something to rest on along the bottom.  

Then a few inconspicuous L-shaped brackets along the top to secure the top (and these could be hidden by anything sitting on the shelf.

The board it rests on would be exposed, but could possibly be painted or stained to match.

Heres what I did, I had a 5x8 1" x 10" deep thick wooden book shelf, I was concerned that one of the kids may try to climb it and it would topple over and hurt them, so what I did was place several small strips of wood 1/4 " thick by 2" wide by 4 feet log and had that nailed to the drywayll and the support behind the drywall, then I had "TAPCONS" holding the bookshelf to the wooden strips, I placed about 4 strips behind my bookshelf. once I was done, The wall would have to fall before the bookshelf did. it was held in place support good.

Put screws through the wood into the studs behind the drywal. Use a stud finder if needbe*
