I've been on the pill for years and just had a laproscopy for endometriosis. They found a cyst on my ovary. But isn't the pill supposed to prevent you from ovulating??? If so, how did that happen?

  1. Ovarian cysts affect women of all ages.  It can grow five or six centimetres wide and usually last four to six weeks.  The cysts are fluid-filled, sac-like structures within an ovary.  It is common among women during their reproductive years and are growths that form on the two almond sized organs on each side of the uterus. It can cause discomfort during intercourse.

Surgery may be required to remove cysts larger than 5 centimeters in diameter (about the size of a tennis ball). It may be considered necessary if a cyst appears suspicious for cancer on the sonogram, if it causes severe pain, if it continues to grow, or if it does not go away in 8 weeks.Surgery may be indicated in cases when bleeding continues or is excessive.
