Question:

How can I have the insurance check made out to me?

I was in a car accident. My car is completely driveable. On Sunday I have to take it to an All State shop to get pics and receive an estimate. Will they make the check out to me or will it be made out to someone else? I am moving to NYC and won't be taking my car so I could use the money for my moving expenses. How can I make this possible?

  1. Talk to your insurance agent.

Most insurance companies prefer to pay the shop directly to ensure that the work is actually done.

  2. Unless you are making payments to a leinholder then the check will be made out to you or to whoever you have the work done by. If you have a lein on the car it will have to be fixed by a reputable mechanic or an approved body shop by the leinholder. Then the check will be made out to the leinholder and/or the bodyshop/mechanic.

If the insurance adjuster looks at the vehicle and you have not decided to where you are going to have the car fixed or going to have "dad" or a "friend" work on it then they will make the check out to you. I am not sure what Allstate does because I work for Nationwide and that is what we do and most other insurance comapanies. Have fun in NYC!

  3. If you own the car outright, they may.  If there's a lienholder, they won't.

  4. I'm no expert on this, but I would suggest you have a look here, there is expert's ideas you mayfind.http://carinsurance.expertsupport.info/a...

  5. If it's YOUR insurance company, they are required to make the check out to you, and the lender, jointly.

If it's NOT your insurance company, they are required to make the check out to you.

But in both situations, they would be happy to make it out to the body shop.

You didn't mention who's insurance company it was.
