She is in my 3 year old preschool class. She's not been diagnosed with sensory deprivation, but she has to touch everything and has trouble sitting still at circle time. How can I help her get through these times?

  1. I had a student with this problem a few years back. I gave him a small drawstring bag with different textured items inside to place his hand into and feel. He had difficulty focusing at circle time anyway, and this allowed him to sit still and focus a bit more than before.

While at home, allow her to have a variety of items to touch and explain the textures and temperatures to her. (i.e. sand paper, wall paper, satin, flannel, fleece, cotton balls, ice, play dough, etc.) Don't keep her from touching while at home. Make this a "safe" environment for her sensory deprivation. Also, explain to her that at home it is ok to touch everything, but while at school, she needs to try to 'limit' her touching. She will begin to understand, but give her time.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
