Question:

How can I help my cat gain weight?

My 9-yr old male siamese is slowly losing weight, although he has an appetite and is still pretty energetic. My/his vet suspects that he is on his way to having a hyperthyroid condition (I hope I described that right), which will eventually require medication. He is due for another check-up and blood test in 3 weeks. I feed him a high calorie (kitten) food, both wet and dry, and give him vitamin supplements, but he is still losing weight. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what might work? If you've had this problem, what has worked for you? Thanks in advance!

  1. try Wellness Core dry cat food. it's high protein and should put some weight on him.  www.wellness.com

  2. try feeding it some wet cat food. that should wrk maybe some treats too, Or another food that has more fat?

  3. I am definitely suspecting thyroid problems. It's probably time to go on medication. Since your cat is only 9 I would actually recommend going through with surgery to have the thyroid completely removed. My cat developed hyperthyroid problems when she was 15 so surgery was sort of out of the question. The medication can really make them sick, my cat would throw up every 2-3 days and sometimes she would get so sick she would pee on my bed instead of in her litter box. Hyperthyroid can lead to a lot of other problems with their organs. If my kitty had been younger I would have definitely had it surgically removed..she passed just a month ago at the age of 17 and it's still hard to deal with the fact that she spent her last couple of years either feeling great or feeling terribly sick. I hope this helps..
