Hello

My cat who is one year old won't accept a kitten I've had for two months whom I adopted. She sometimes play fights and even mothers her sometimes, l*****g her and I did find them asleep together occasionally, but these days she just gets very agitated and aggressive and leaves the house as soon as she sees the kitten. i hate to see her unhappy and don't know what to do...can anyone help?

  1. How old is the kitten? Since she initially accepted the kitten, and now rejects it, I'd guess that the kitten might be about 5-6 months old now, and becoming sexually mature.  If that's the case, having the kitten (and the older cat, if she isn't already) fixed should help.

Otherwise, has anything else in your household changed recently?  Be sure you are giving your first cat plenty of attention, especially in the presence of the kitten, and try to keep her routines the same. Each cat should have his/her own food, water and litter, and try to give your older cat a place (like a high perch) where she can get away from the kitten without leaving the house (cats are safer indoors).

You might also try a Feliway plug-in.  It mimics a cat's calming pheromones, and helps cats accept newcomers. It's available at most pet stores.
