How can I help my friend...?

I have a dear friend I don't live close to and I'm worried sick about her.

We talk alot and I know most of her issues and I try been there as much as I can but I don't know what advice to give or help her in overcoming them. She's still doing recreational drugs quite regularly and self harms also. I listen and I've offered to jump on a train and be there anytime. I've said I will go the doctors with her if need be but still, she's hurting and I can't do anything to help.

Has anyone else got any ideas please?

  1. You can't force someone to seek the help they need.

Sorry, but that's just how it is.

Being willing to drop everything and rush to help her is probably counter-productive.

  2. comfort her and listen to her.Maybe you can go with her to a therapy?

  3. You should go and visit her and stay with her for a while. Try and understand her problems and her way of a release to them. Just comfort her and try and get her to open up as much as possible.

  4. Has she explained why she doesn't want help, or is unwilling to tell anyone else?

Is there a situation at home she's escaping from, which is why she self injures or does drugs?

To fix the results you have to find the cause.  You need to know  what the problem is.  If it's not her parents, could you talk her into asking them to get her help?

When she talks about self injuring don't act afraid or repulsed, and don't make her promise not to do it again. Try to understand why, and maybe ask her to call you when she feels like hurting herself.

Many self injurers find drawing or writing eases their urge.

As far as drugs go, I think that would take either a very strong will or medication-although I don't have much experience in that field.
