  1. The most effective way to help others become better citizens (or grow in any type of endeavor) is to be an example. Research has proven that influence is very strong! We can spend all day trying to get someone to do something good and all kinds of effort, when if we spent the same amount of energy and time on ourselves we'd get so much father with ourselves and influence others so much more.

"Better citizens" could be a huge category. But some good examples might be, be kind to those you come in contact with on a weekly/daily basis, respect others, have a good moral character, be polite, patience, honest, great work ethic, etc. Many things could be added to this list. I'm sure we could all make a list a few pages long.

This might seem over whelming but here are some tips to start off with.

-- Start small! How can we be honest in the big things when we aren't even honest in the little things. So be super honest in every little thing you do. Start doing small deeds of kindness to that person that bugs you at work. Most of these cost you nothing (like smiling, saying "Good morning", etc.).

-- Spend the first hour of the day reading/listening/meditating on something worthwhile/good. Reading the newspaper, watching TV, participating in an argument on Yahoo Answers, or anything else that drains you first off isn't so great.

-- Be thankful! Start a thankfulness journal! Everyday write down one thing that you are thankful for. We'll be amazed at our attitude about life, others and circumstances.

-- Confess your faults. To our Creator and to others. This is actually quite rewarding in that it frees up our consciousness so that we can think clearer, helps people realize we are really human and we are trying our best, and most importantly it humbles us. Humility isn't something learned. It's something that is just there. And we can all sense it! Even if we can't pinpoint the actual actions that are causing it.

Some of the things that make us better citizens in the sense of our civic responsibilities is voting, attending/participating in public hearings, showing up for jury duty, etc. But it's more then that. We can get involved in so many more ways then just voting. How about being a poll worker? I just got home from a poll worker academy for our county elections department. It's really rewarding, fun and you actually get paid to do so (at least in our county).

Then there is volunteering at our local organizations, homeless shelters, rescue missions, Red Cross, museums, to be a mentor to other young people, visiting the elderly and sick and doing something for them that they might not be able to do themselves (trim the trees in their yard), etc.

The list goes on and on. The point is be an inspiration to others by being an overachiever! Start small, be honest, and do what you know is right. :)

Keep asking the right questions, do the right things and you'll soon be on your way to being the right person and inspiring others to be the right person.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and 8th Habit by Stephen Covey are just a couple of some very good reads on this subject that are out there. :)

  12. Don't call them retards. It destroys whatever self confidence they may have. many people who are considered retarded, are realy very slow learners. It may take them three or four times ask long to learn a task as a normal person. Once they learn something they tend to remember it. They have the ability to learn tasks, that can be simple, and do them well. Examples are mostly from what are called service employees---who job involves completing task such a janitors and hotel maids.
