Question:

How can I hide my washing machine behine a kitchen unit door?

It's not an integrated machine and I am loathe to replace it since it's not very old, but I do want it hidden in my new kitchen. I'd hoped to just build it in to a deep unit, but the unit door is 600 mm wide, the same as the machine, so the unit itself is only 570mm wide. Any suggestions?

  1. I had a similar problem when I designed and made a kitchen.I solved the problem by putting the machine sideways on inside an end unit with a space next to it and putting a false cupboard door on the front.Difficult to explain without a drawing, but if you can imagine a run of units that has a break for maybe a door, then the door of the washing machine would open into that gap,not into the kitchen.Visually, looking round the room, you cannot see the machine at all.Don`t worry about water supply and outlet for the machine, they are all part of having a good kitchen.

  2. you can buy standard kitchen units at 700,800mm etc. if width is a problem... if you are concerned about depth consider a false frame (same as front of unit) with a door on and your machine on the floor inside. all you need to worry about in the kitchen is how everything looks with doors closed.

  3. There is no way to make this look 'integrated'. Since you can't shrink the machine, you would have to remove the unit (which can be challenging/impossible to do without damaging the worktop, depending on how it was installed), and fit the 600mm machine into the 600mm space with no leeway whatsoever. Where would the power cord go? The water and waste connections? You would have to attach the door to an adjacent unit - how would you do that without damage and while hiding the hinges and maintaining the spaces between the edges of the doors? What about the plinth across the bottom?  Last, but not least, I am sure that, like any large appliance, your washing machine requires some amount of clearance at the back, sides, and front to function properly.

In other words, you cannot fully integrate a non-integrated appliance. Sorry!
