i am starting college in the fall, and as most college students are into drugs, my therapist, doctor, and mother have all advised me to hide my taking anti-depressants from my roommate, whom i have not met before. I have to cut the pills and take one at 7 and the other when i am going to bed. Any ideas?

  1. The reason why your therapist said to hide them is because most post puberty young adolescents are idiots.

I think therapists are stupid for mentioning that.  You don't need to hide the fact that you are taking anti-depressants.  Take them as necessary.. i bet you.. your roommate won't even care.

But if you want to hide your pills (which i think is absurd).. keep a little bag with your bathroom stuff in it.  Keep your medicine in it.. Take the pills when you are in the bathroom.. simple as that.  you have all the privacy you need.

  2. The recreational value of anti-depressants is virtually zero.  I've never heard of a doctor or therapist recommending that a patient hide anti-depressants to keep other people from taking or selling the pills.  That being said, if you choose to hide the medication, I suggest you keep it in the prescription bottle and hide that.  Then if somebody finds it, they'll at least know you have a prescription.  They're also unlikely to take any if they see it's an anti-depressant.  On the other hand, if somebody found an unmarked bag of pills among your belongings, that would be far more awkward and arguably more dangerous.

  3. Put them in a vitamin bottle and just say that you take vitamins to help you overall. But be sure to actually hide them because if your room mate takes them as well they may accidently take yours - And I don't see why your therapist would advise you to hide them, you take anti depressants, alot of people do - it's nothing to be ashamed about I mean heck I'll admit I took them because I did - when I was 10 I was put on them because I was also going thru chemotherapy and it got me pretty down and I'll easily admit that the time I was on them was the happiest of my life, nothing to be ashamed about at all for being on them.

  4. It may not be such a good idea to try and hide them because if someone were to accidentally stumble upon them that could be bad, and since it sounds like you are in a dorm with a roommate and communal bathroom there is a chance that it could happen.  And like others have said if you put them in a different bottle, like a vitamin bottle, what would you do if she asked for a vitamin or why were you cutting up the vitamin? Since you don't want to tell her they are anti-depressants for fear that she might take them and/or sell them, which you shouldn't have such a negative view of others, but i understand, why don't you just tell her they are for something else, like acne medicine or maybe pills for some kinda of a mineral deficiency, like iron.  I hope you are able to come up with a solution.

  5. I think it's just better to be honest with the roommate from the get-go and casually take one in front of him/her at bedtime. Obviously you need to take them on a daily basis and you would know if any were missing.  Alot of people are on some form of mental health drug so it's very common.  I think you'll find out quickly if you're new roommate is taking drugs and then you can get rid of them.  Don't think the worst either, not all college kids are into drugs some are actually into studying and making the best of a new experience.

  6. I wouldn't tell them. Say they are vitamins or something. At least until you know your roommate. Not to say you should be embarrassed, but people do steal pills. My little brother sold the ADD medication I wasn't using anymore, and he sold some other kind of pills too. I'm not the kind to get paranoid about the "drug epidemic" but there is a big market for prescription drugs.
