I recently purchased a PS3 , and I was trying to hook it up to my home theatre system. It is currently hooked directly into the tv via the HDMI cable....which is by-passing the home theatre system. I wish to include the home theatre system, I attempted to use an optical audio cable from the console to the home theatre but it didn't work...any suggestions...we would like to watch our blue-ray movies in full surround sound. Would a HDMI cable from the console to the home theatre and a second HDMI cable from the home theare to the tv solve the problems?

  1. just plug it into your receivers inputs, audio into audio in and video into video in.

  2. You can plug in the HDMI cable to your surround sound system and have another go to your TV, or you can use the optical cable as you had it.

Just go into the Sound options on the PS3 and set it to output over optical.  Optical supports up to 5.1; If you want 7.1, you'll have to go with HDMI.
