How can I impress the audience?

I am planning to sing in a karaoke contest. I will be singing Alanis Morissette-You Oughta Know. I got the singing down packed because I'm able to sing songs like Mariah Carey, so I'm not worried about my vocal ability. What I am worried about is #2 below. Below is the way they will be scoring my performance.

1) Vocal ability (worth up to 50 points)

A: Tonal quality

B: Pitch control, power, range

C: Articulation

2) Stage Presence (worth up to 30 points)

A: Stage presence, charisma, command of the audience, confidence

B: Overall Entertainment Value

3) Crowd Response (worth up to 20 points)

This will be measured with an applause gauge.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what I should do to fullfill #2? it's worth 30 points on the judging and I would like to make sure I can get those points.

What should I do to impress the crowd?

  1. Just have fun! Don't worry about all the technical stuff! Get the crowd involved, clapping or w/e it takes to do. Dress appropriately, and act modest at both your entrance and exit.... also, try to be energetic, this will put the crown "in the mood"

  2. Make use of the whole stage. It's boring when someone stands in one spot the whole time.

Facial expressions and eye contact. That's the key to connecting with the audience.

And just for fun: Watch 'Duets' on DVD.

  3. move around, but try not to make repetative movements.  make eye contact with your audience.  the most important thing is to mean every single word you're singing.

    good luck!

  4. Just get out there and have fun! If the audience sees YOU having fun, chances are THEY will have fun too. The more the better. If it's too much, I'm sure they'll let you know. Use the stage (or venue or floor, etc). It's your friend! Get into your song and really think about what it means to you. Above all, just have a good time!

    Good luck!
